I’m blogging from the Munich Media-Design School, which is currently jam-packed with 75 nerds and our peripherals. Our team is working on a kick-ass concept that I’ll be sharing tomorrow evening. In the meantime, check out these games I’ve worked on at past jams:

DINO FLING

SLEUTH

Sleuth is a two-player game, one player is a punk hiding as a monk in a monastery, while the second player is a detective trying to catch the punk. Player 1 has to mimic the behavior of bot monks, making for really unique gameplay. You can play the game here.

If you’re not yet aware, today the internet has gone on strike. It’s a metaphorical strike, simply a statement of our solidarity and expression of our displeasure with the direction of current legislation designed to undermine the openness of the web. I’d like to take a moment to speak to why Canadians need to get behind this movement, despite its American origin.

Have a little peek at this recent article, from the Huffington Post. It describes a recent ruling, where a Canadian judge ordered several ISPs to hand over identifying information about individuals who downloaded “The Hurt Locker.” Precedent showed that courts would not go after individual fire-sharers, but it seems that we’ve amended that concept- courts won’t go after individual fire-sharers unless American parties ask them to. We’re already seeing a shift in Canadian policy as it addresses the openness of the Internet, and SOPA/PIPA will have far-reaching impacts both in the US and across the global net. What country do Americans in Canada move to once we aren’t the place to be anymore?

We attended an open house at the Fab Lab here in Munich tonight, and I have to say that I’m very impressed! The place was packed, and there was a big crowd checking out the resources, which included access to a laser cutter, a number of 3d printers, a CNC machine and an assortment of tools. There was a giant Facebook “Like” button on the wall (over 6000 likes) and a wide variety of electronic bits and pieces all over the place. I picked up a couple brochures for DIY organizations nearby. I’m excited to check them out!

We were really excited to discover a place called Noisebridge, where anyone can go to learn about electronics, programming, rapid prototyping and other DIY/Hacking things. The Vancouver Mini Maker Faire is coming!

I’ve been getting all worked up about it over the last couple of weeks. Attending volunteer meetings, I’m hearing things like “Robot Petting Zoo” and “Bacon making workshop,” so I’m thinking it’s going to be my cup of tea (and yours if you’re a reader of my blog.) Sean Arden and Myron Campbell of the Emily Carr Masters Program will be presenting their work at the Faire, among hundreds of other exhibitors and workshop holders.

The event organizers talk a lot about the various DIY communities in Vancouver and their strength individually, and hope that in holding this event which brings them all together, we can unify the overall community in Vancouver. It’s an incredible idea, where they’ve spotted a need, and are creating something to serve it. (Design thinking? Discuss.)

I popped down to Seattle yesterday morning, where David Sherwin and David Conrad presented the last of the AIGA Breakfast Series – a considered approach to building business models (for yourself or your company) around the kinds of design work that you want to be doing. It was well timed for my post-grad self and full of charming folks. You know who you are.

There were also some especially useful notions that came up- the idea that you do the kind of work that you’ve done (so watch out for projects that don’t take you where you’d like to go) is particularly important to note as a recent grad. They also provided tools for self-reflection on your job, and the kind of work you like to do vs. the kind of work you hate.

Looking forward to seeing the slides online, so I can share them with friends who missed the event. And can’t wait to use the new Web Stencil Kit that Design Commission provided as the pleasing prize items.
